The Dungchen - literally, the great horn of the Tibetan Tantric orchestra - come in various lengths, measuring at times up to 15 ft. Often constructed in telescoping sections to simplify the tasks of transporting and storing them, the dungchen are always played at least in pairs. Its sound has often been described as "that of elephants singing". Tsultrim Allione - one of the first American women to be ordained as a tibetan nun - poetically described the sound as "a long, deep, whirring, haunting wail that takes you out somewhere beyond the highest Himalaya peaks and at the same time back into your mother's womb."
The Kangling is a short Tibetan trumpet (sometimes made out of a human thighbone). Most monasitic kanglings made of wood and metal and are elaborately decorated.
