| Photography and The Art of Grumbling |
Choose. Photography? Or, Grumbling? You just can't have both, not possible. I should know, after all I've done quite a bit of both. |
"Oh, the light isn't right" "Oh, I really don't feel like switching the lens on the body at this moment, maybe some other time" "Oh, I really intended to go shoot early this morning, but I was up till late last night" "Oh, there's nothing to see" "Oh, I wish I were out traveling somewhere so I could really go and make some great images" And the list goes on, ad infinitum. |
Excuses, excuses, excuses. Or, if you don't like the first sentence in this paragraph, substitute it with Grumble, grumble, grumble. Big deal, it amounts to the same thing. Any excuse - I mean any grumble - to avoid going out there and doing what needs to be done. |
(By the way, before I proceed any further let me clarify that speaking for myself, I for one don't make excuses. I DO NOT MAKE EXCUSES! Period. I, grumble. Excuses are what everybody else makes. To keep things simple, I'm going to use the term "grumble" from now on. But do keep in mind that the term is truly applicable to me -- "grumble" should be substituted with "make excuses" for everybody else) |
Take care, though! Grumble enough, and you could just end up making an art of it. And when you make an art of it, you end up with The Art of Grumbling, which really doesn't mix at all with The Art of Photography. |
My favorite grumble for ever so long has been a lack of things to photograph around me. I just long to head out on one of my photography workshops and tours where there's just an ample wealth of subjects waiting to be explored and photographed. Translated, that reads "Oh, there's nothing to see" and "Oh, I wish I were out traveling somewhere so I could really go and make some great images" both of which are great "grumbles" (hey, I've just coined at new usage of the term!), but really don't do much for my photography. |
Sometimes, when I stop grumbling, and start seeing, I realize that one really doesn't need to go too far to see some really great things and come back with memorable images, for they're to be found - as I was to discover - right where we stand! |
